We stopped counting the reviews!

The reception of The People in the Basement by the Danish media has been overwhelming with 7 or more positive reviews in all the main newspapers in just 10 days. We have already told you about the reviews in Jyllandsposten, Information and Berlingske Tidene and now Weekendavisen, Politiken, Jydske Vestkysten and Fyens Stiftstidende have joined this choir .

Her own voice

Politiken was very generous on Saturday, laying out a whole page with a photo of the author and the book cover.

(...) her first translation to Danish and a double portrait a generation.

Well, is it just like Steinunn Sigurdardottirs "Heart Place" Like Einar Mar Gudmundssons modern Saga "Footprints in Heaven" etc.? Or like the celebrated "101 Reykjavik" written by Hallgrimur Helgason? Yes and no. Born in 1973, Audur is 23, 18 and 14 years younger than her colleagues, she is therefore writing about the 68 generation from the point of view of its children. And then of course, she has a voice on her own, wich at the same time reminds us of Sigurdardottirs unsentimental, knowing wisdom, Einar Mar's broken, doomed poetry and Helgasons vicious chaos fascination. (...)

Audur Jonsdottirs Novel is funny, rough and awe inspiring. A 1968 offspring's colourful and morally honest explorations of the posibilities of inheriting the freedom and live a responsible life at the same time.

40 years hangover

Weekendavisen said that the book had a relatively slow start but in the middle of the book things started to speed up.

(...) So many events can taking place the same night may not be very believable, but it certainly is entertaining. And importantly: in this jump from psychological everyday drama to absurd theatre the Novel moves in a rapid pace from the predictable to the alarming. May there be more writing coming from that place!

Suberb Novel

Fyens stiftstidende are deligthed and they just cant seem to get enough of Audur!

Jonsdottir has just finished writing the last lines of her latest Novel. While we are waiting for it to be puplished, The people in the basement can be read once more. It is suberb and enchanting.

The novel has so many layers and it is so filled with deatails making this task very far from a waste of time.

Grotesque in a funny way

And last, but not least, Jydske Vestkysten is also positive.

Jonsdottir writes in a lifely way and without detours, her story hits with precission a time and place wich is easy to identyfy.

The mood is bittersweet, the memories are grotesque in a funny way at times, while the core of the tale is warm and human.
